Youth-Led Clean up Program

Youth-Led Clean up Program

Community parks are places where people breathe fresh air, walk with friends, exercise, and spend peaceful time with nature. They bring people together and help build healthy and connected communities. Keeping these spaces clean is not only the responsibility of authorities, but also of the people who use them every day.

With this understanding, Drokpo Nepal organized a clean-up program at Jagdol Community Park on 29 December 2025. The clean up was conducted with the participation of 24 students, 4 staff and 1 park official who directed and organized the activity. Students from Grades 11 and 12 actively took part, acting to protect the environment and support the local community.

Jagdol community park is located in Gokarneshwor Municipality and holds strong local value. Residents recognize the area for natural beauty, forest trails, viewpoints and cultural importance. As daily use has increased in recent years, care and protection have become more important than ever. The program was well-planned and smoothly implemented with all required cleaning equipment arranged in advance and the activity was carried out in coordination with the local park authority.

The day began with introductions and interaction among students, staff and park representatives. This created a welcoming space where everyone could connect, share experiences and build friendships. After sharing a meal together, students were divided into groups and began cleaning different parts of the park. Participants swept trails and public places and focused on other significant locations within the park. Some groups collected plastic waste and bottles from the ground and pathways, while others carefully removed old prayer flags from trees to improve the overall appearance of the area.

As a result of the clean up, 33 bigs sacks of garbage were collected, most of which consisted of plastic, bottles and used prayer flags.  By the end of the day, the park looked cleaner, fresher and more welcoming. The activity ended with a short closing session, where students were thanked for their efforts and encouraged to continue caring for the environment in their daily lives.

Beyond the physical clean-up, the program was a valuable learning and social experience. Grade 11 and 12 scholarship students were taught practical knowledge on waste management, environmental ethics and civic responsibility. The activity also helped learners from different grades coexist, collaborate, and work together for a common cause. It was a space for learning, leadership, teamwork, and connection, showing students that small actions, when done together, can create meaningful change.

This project aligns with the mission of Drokpo Nepal, which is to create strong and independent communities through education, practical learning, and environmental care. By engaging young people in real cleaning activities, the program demonstrated how young leaders can create positive change and develop long-term stewardship of shared spaces. Through initiatives like this, Drokpo Nepal continues to empower youth to protect the environment, serve their communities, and grow as responsible citizens.
