Education

Program Overview

We believe education is the key to empowerment, equality and sustainable development. Our education program supports children, youth and adults from Himalayan communities who had limited access to learning opportunities because of financial challenges or family responsibilities. With this program, we focus on providing people the chance to continue their studies, learn useful skills and build the confidence they need to lead independent and meaningful lives.

We believe education is the key to empowerment, equality, and sustainable development.

Program Description

Our Education Program comprises of several sub-programs as explained below.

Scholarship Support

Every year, Drokpo provides scholarships to students from Manjughoksha Academy who have completed their secondary education. Manjughoksha Academy, with the support of the Manjushri Association offers children from poor and remote areas opportunities to study and grow in a safe and nurturing environment. Many of these students come from families who cannot afford school fees and who live far away in mountain villages. Some are separated from their parents who work abroad while others are cared for by relatives in Kathmandu.

By extending scholarships for higher studies, Drokpo helps ensure that these young people can continue learning after they finish school. Our support allows them to take the next step like going to college or joining vocational training which aids them building a better future for themselves and their communities.

For us, this is more than just helping someone go to school. It is about giving young people the confidence, hope and opportunity to shape their own paths.

Skill Development for Youth

Transitioning from school to independent life can be challenging, especially for youth from remote Himalayan regions. Through our skill development program, we help these youths gain practical skills that can lead to employment or self-reliance.

The program offers training in areas such as hospitality, bakery, barista, computer and digital literacy, driving and graphic design. We work with local trainers, businesses and organizations to provide participants real world experience and help them prepare for future job opportunities. The training also helps them gain the knowledge and confidence to start their own small business when they are ready. Our aim is to help young people become capable, independent and ready to build their own path forward.

Adult Literacy Program

Education should never stop, no matter your age. Since 2018, Drokpo has been running literacy classes for adults, especially monks, nuns and housewives who did not get the chance to study when they were younger.

The classes are held in our office in Kathmandu, five days a week (from 3pm to 5pm). Participants learn English and Tibetan reading and writing, along with basic communication that helps them in daily life.

Apart from learning to read and write, these classes give people confidence and a sense of pride. Our beneficiaries tell us how much it means to finally be able to read signs, fill out forms and assist their children with homework. For others it is also a way to reconnect with their culture and language.
