At Drokpo Nepal, we are dedicated to advancing women’s health and menstrual dignity by empowering individuals who menstruate. Our work challenges gender inequalities and long-held stigmas around menstruation, fostering awareness, education, and sustainable practices across communities.
In Nepal’s remote mountain regions, period poverty remains a pressing issue. Many women, nuns and girls still lack access to safe menstrual products, clean water and accurate health education. Cultural taboos often labeled menstruation as “impure,” with euphemisms such as Kepa (hip) and Chhiu hunu (to be untouchable) used to speak about it in secrecy. These harmful beliefs isolate menstruators and normalize pain and discomfort without care or support.
Our approach focuses on education, access, and empowerment. We engage in educational outreach, distribute menstrual products, and advocate for diverse, sustainable solutions such as reusable sanitary pads. We create culturally sensitive spaces in schools, nunneries, and refugee settlements where open conversations about menstrual health are welcomed. Along with promoting eco-friendly alternatives, we encourage women and girls to take ownership of their menstrual well-being with confidence and pride.
To ensure lasting impact, we offer hands-on pad-making workshops where participants learn to make their own reusable pads using locally available materials. These workshops not only provide practical skills but also nurture independence, self-reliance, and community-led sustainability.
